As you fill out the application to attend the Summer Program, you will be asked to select an Admission Status. Following is an explanatory list of the seven options that appear on the application form. Please read this entire list carefully and use it to determine the category into which you fall. Most people will check only one box, but if you are applying for courses in more than one category, check all boxes that apply.
Application Deadlines. The Summer Program is still accepting applications for non-competitive Four-Week workshops for both the First and Second Sessions. We are also accepting applications for Statistical Three- to Five-Day workshops, which will remain open only until the Summer Program office has received 20 paid applications for each class. Note that the deadlines for Competitive Three- to Five-Day workshops vary. Please check the deadlines for these courses on each workshop's respective course description page.
Program Scholar. Participants who will attend noncompetitive four-week courses, and do not wish to receive graduate credit, should mark the Program Scholar box on the application. Note that this academic status provides for no official University of Michigan transcript of your performance, and access to non-ICPSR University of Michigan facilities may be limited. As a Program Scholar, however, you will be treated by instructors no differently from those who are taking the courses for credit. You will be encouraged to turn in all assignments, and your work will be evaluated and graded. If you complete all assignments, the Summer Program office will maintain a file for you including a graded evaluation from the instructor. A letter verifying completion of the workshop, including that grade, can be mailed out on your behalf for a fee of $10 per letter. Program Scholar fees may be either submitted with the application form or paid at registration; all Program Scholar fees must be paid on or before registration day. Payment should be made directly to the "ICPSR Summer Program." Program Scholars who withdraw from a four-week session less than five working days after the start of classes will be charged a $100 fee. After that date, no refunds will be allowed for late withdrawals from the Program.
Competitive Four-Week. There will be two Competitive Four-Week workshops offered in 2008: Quantitative Analysis of Crime and Criminal Justice and Methodological Issues in Quantitative Research on Race and Ethnicity, which are marked with an asterisk on the application form. You should only check the Competitive Four-Week box on the application if you are applying for one of these workshops. Check the individual course description for special application procedures and deadlines. If you are accepted for a Competitive Four-Week workshop, you will be welcome to attend other workshops and lectures that meet during the same four-week session. Selecting those other classes on the application will not change your admission status; you should check only the Competitive Four-Week box.
Statistical Three- to Five-Day. Check the Statistical Three- to Five-Day box if you are applying for one or more of the short workshops that are indicated as noncompetitive. Note that while there is no specific application deadline for these particular courses, only the first 20 paid applicants to each workshop will be accepted. In the event that your employer or university will be covering your fees, and will need some time to process the paperwork, we can still hold a place for you. We will accept either a copy of the completed paperwork or a letter/email promising payment from the person with authority over the account. Once we have received this confirmation, your space in the workshop will be secure until payment arrives. Statistical Three- to Five-Day workshop applicants who cancel their registration less than 21 days prior to the workshop will be subject to a $100 late withdrawal fee. Cancellation earlier than this will result in a complete refund. Fees for Statistical Three- to Five-Day workshops are nonrefundable after the first day of class.
Competitive Three- to Five-Day. The competitive workshops are all marked with an asterisk on the application form. Check the individual course description for special application procedures and deadlines.
You should only choose one of the credit categories if you intend to take a four-week workshop for graduate credit at the University of Michigan. If you have questions about whether you need to take a course for credit, please speak with your advisor and/or contact the Summer Program office. Please note the difference between four-week lectures and four-week workshops. Credit can be awarded only for the workshops. Lectures are designed to be supplemental to the workshops and cannot be taken for credit. Please note also that none of the Three- to Five-Day workshops can be taken for credit.
University of Michigan. If you are already a student at the University of Michigan, or will be entering the University next fall and have the permission of your department, you are welcome to take the four-week workshops for graduate credit. Please note that University of Michigan students who are paying tuition to attend one or more workshops during a four-week session are also eligible to sit in, on a noncredit basis, on other workshops and lectures that meet during the same four-week session. For example, frequently participants will devote themselves to one or two workshops in particular, while also attending, on a more casual basis, another workshop or lecture, either to get acquainted with new material, or to review something that has been previously studied. Our courses are listed under Political Science in the Summer Term Time Schedule, but you will need an override to register for them. Please fill out the Summer Program application form and we will send you information regarding the dispersal of overrides. University of Michigan credit students will pay their tuition to the University, and should follow the usual University procedure for tuition payment. The last drop/withdrawal date is the first Friday of each four-week session.
Summer Guest. This status is for those who are not University of Michigan students, but who still wish to take ICPSR Summer Program courses for graduate credit. Because of the expense, it is quite rare for students to attend the Program in this manner, but occasionally there are circumstances that warrant it. Please contact the Summer Program if you would like to discuss your particular case. If you apply as a Summer Guest, you will also need to complete an application to enroll in the University of Michigan's Rackham Graduate School as a Guest Student. Our office will send you this form after we receive your application to the Summer Program. Summer Guest tuition is paid to "The University of Michigan."
Your membership in ICPSR is determined by your university or organizational affiliation. If you are a staff member or a student at a member institution, you will be eligible to pay fees that are much lower than those for nonmembers. Each member institution has an ICPSR Official Representative (OR) on campus who might have helpful advice about the Program or additional materials that you might find worthwhile. A list of ICPSR Member Institutions and ORs can be found online: http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/ICPSR/membership/ors.html.
If you use our online registration form, the confirmation page that appears after submission will offer you the option of paying your fees via credit card. Both the registration form and the credit card form are secure; however, to ensure that they are linked to one another, you must complete the credit card form immediately after submitting the registration form. So have your card, or the card information from the person covering your fee, handy when you sit down to fill out the registration form. If you miss that window, you can always call, email, or fax the card information in to us. Note that while only Statistical Three- to Five-Day workshops require up-front payment, Program Scholars are also welcome to pay right away. Other acceptable forms of payment include checks, money orders, or cash/traveler's checks. If your fees will be paid by an outside sponsor who will require an invoice from ICPSR, a $25 per-invoice processing fee will be charged and added to the total. In the meantime, you must provide a letter from the sponsor stating agreement to pay the fees. Non-payment by a sponsor becomes the liability and responsibility of the participant. Contact the Summer Program for instructions and clarification of ICPSR's invoicing procedures.

Note: Registrations for the three- and five-day statistical workshops are on a per-course basis. That is, a participant registered for that course may not attend other ICPSR courses (unless, of course, he or she is registered separately for those other courses). Program scholars can attend as many four-week ICPSR workshops and lectures as they want during the four-week session for which they are registered.
